NHS Face Shield
Interactual, in close partnership with JNDC, completed a NPD sprint over just 7 weeks to bring to high volume production a best-in-class, fully compliant and CE marked Face Shield in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The product was developed in close collaboration with senior frontline clinicians at UCLH and Royal London to develop what the partner clinicians said was a best-in-class product especially for staff undertaking aerosol generating procedures (AGPs).
“Today we did a tracheostomy on a very sick COVID positive ICU patient. The feedback was that this visor affords far greater protection to the user. The reason being that it is deeper top to bottom and wider ear to ear. The other feedback was that you could hardly tell you were wearing it.”
- Dr Neil Randhawa, Consultant Anaesthetist, Clinical lead Pre-assessment clinic, Associate Divisional Clinical Director, Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital
Particular attention was paid to best practice procedures for donning and doffing as developed by UCLH in response to C-19 ICU requirements as this was identified as a high-risk procedure. The product was developed to ensure that it could be applied and removed in a manner that was familiar and intuitive.
We established a manufacturing and assembly process using parts of the UK supply chain not otherwise engaged in PPE supply to ensure secure and reliable supply. Through this supply chain and the formation of a not-for-profit business, protectingheroes.org, we delivered 100,000 face shields to the DHSC for use by front line NHS staff.
Supported closely by the National Physics Laboratory (where we have also established the packaging and dispatch facility) we engaged with long-term test partners SATRA to rapidly establish compliance to EN 166 and 168 and the EU Regulation on Personal Protective Equipment 2016/425 which documentation has allowed us to CE Mark the product as class 3 PPE.
“Easy to use, excellent protection and comfortable all day, in my opinion the best Face Shield available.”
- Professor Anil Patel, Consultant Anaesthetist, Royal National ENT & Eastman Dental Hospital, DAS Professor of Anaesthesia & Airway Management
